Greetings from Business Academy at New Market Skills Center! Here's an update on recent events.
The second semester started off on the right foot - our class placed second in the state competition for LifeSmarts in Seattle. A huge thank you to the Attorney General's office for hosting this exciting event! Life Smarts is a competitive event centered around consumer literacy skills. Competition is based upon five categories: Personal Finance, Consumer Rights & Responsibilities, Technology, Health & Safety, and Environment. So nice to know we have some LifeSmarts!
In April, WSECU brought the Reality Fair to the New Market campus. Business Academy students helped host the event and were able to practice customer service and sales skills as well as networking with our with community partners. This event gives students the chance to explore financial decision making to develop budgeting strategies before and after college.
Learning about personal finance this semester, students are setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-Bound) goals, learning about financial intermediaries, reconciling a bank statement and currently studying credit and debt. I hope they take something away from this; it's getting close to graduation. Some of the students manage the classroom budget and partnering with other programs to help host events.
Graduation is coming up and summer school is the next adventure!
