WSECU is currently in its third decade of hosting a scholarship program. This year we are slated to disperse more than $70,000 in scholarship funds to students. Through our in-house scholarship program, we give out several four-year scholarships as well as two-year scholarships.
On top of that, we provide scholarships for New Market Skill Center students in Olympia. WSECU offers the Bill and Jodie Brandt Scholarship, which is designated for New Market students chosen by the staff. Also, for the last six years, we have been pleased to be a financial supporter of the All Washington Academic Team. The All-Washington Academic Team recognizes and honors our state’s finest higher education students. The All-Washington Academic Team provides scholarships to 65 students representing 34 community and technical colleges throughout the state.
I have always been proud to work for a company that provides scholarships to students, but I never desired to be part of the process. In fact, the idea seemed pretty boring and possibly miserable. So when I was asked to be part of the WSECU’s Scholarship Committee, I was pretty reluctant. My wife is a teacher and watching her read and grade essays has often left me feeling very bad for her!
It was surprising to me to find the scholarship committee role so rewarding. In fact, it has been both my privilege and honor to be part of WSECU’s Scholarship Committee. Going into it, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I thought, “Read some essays and help decide who is awarded scholarships,” is all the job entailed. However, it is so much more! Through the scholarship applications, I am able to get a glimpse into these students’ lives. They tell me about their struggles and successes, as well as their goals and dreams. I often hear people talk about how scared they are of future generations, but read some of these students’ essays, and you will see some amazing young people who are changing and bettering the communities they touch.
WSECU Scholarship winners do not fit into a certain box. There are female winners as well as male. There are valedictorians; however, some just barely graduated. Our scholarship winners are of all ages. So, if you are a WSECU member and attending school, I encourage you to apply for one of our scholarships. Actually, I encourage you to apply for every scholarship you can! With the average cost of college increasing 5 percent every year, how awesome would it be to earn enough money in scholarships to pay for your entire college education?
