WSECU and SHCU Merge

State Highway Credit Union is now WSECU

April 24, 2023 (Olympia, Wash.) – State Highway Credit Union (SHCU) has merged with WSECU following an affirmative vote by its membership. The merger, whose legal effective date was April 1, will be complete on May 15, 2023.
WSECU as the continuing credit union is excited to welcome SHCU’s approximately 1,600 members and working to assure a smooth transition. As a result of the merger, WSECU also gains a new branch in Union Gap, Wash., located at 2632 Rudkin Road. This increases WSECU’s statewide network to 23 branch locations.
For members of SHCU, the merger brings the benefits of joining an institution that offers access to a wider range of financial products and services, an extensive branch network and Shared Branching access nationwide, and more digital banking tools. SHCU employees were retained and are now part of the WSECU team. This was important to provide continuity and familiarity to the members and to retain institutional knowledge and expertise.
“We have been working for months to welcome SHCU members and make the transition easy for them,” said Gary Swindler, WSECU’s President and CEO. “SHCU has built strong, meaningful relationships with members and we are committed to doing the same going forward.”
SHCU leaders took the proactive step to seek a friendly merger partner from a position of strength as it considered its future as a small credit union. The planned retirement of SHCU CEO Karen Woodall provided the board of directors a natural transition opportunity to consider what was in the best interest of members for the long term. Merging with WSECU, a credit union that shares a history of serving public employees, was found to be the perfect fit.
From working to assure SHCU members will retain their account numbers to pledging to continue a special scholarship program, WSECU will respectfully honor the long legacy and history of SHCU throughout the conversion and beyond.
“It’s a new chapter for the former SHCU and WSECU is taking great care of us,” said Karen Woodall. “I’m excited for members to experience our new credit union’s exceptional service for themselves.”
