Unfamiliar transaction? It may not be fraud.

Unexpected wording can make legitimate transactions appear fraudulent at first. A mysterious company on a credit card or account statement may actually be a corporate owner or service provider for a merchant you did business with. These unrecognized-at-first transactions may be especially common when using payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo.

Before reporting the transaction as fraud, triple check.

  • Check receipts. Receipts can be good clues when dates and dollar amounts match.
  • Check your accounts. Review your payment history, especially if you use PayPal, Venmo or other similar accounts.
  • Check the internet. Do a search for the listed company to see if it’s associated with anyone you recently paid with your credit card.
